Failing to File Your Tax Return

There are many reasons why people fail to file their tax returns. However, the two main reasons are:

  1. They don’t think they have the documentation to file. Perhaps they don’t have the paperwork from a past employer, or they’ve simply misplaced their tax return. If this is the case, you should file anyway! There are other ways to get the information, or you can even estimate the numbers based on previous years.
  2. They don’t have the money to pay the taxes they owe. When someone knows they owe money to the IRS, they fail to file their return in hopes of being overlooked. However, it is still better to file your return in this case. Failing to pay money you owe the IRS is a civil matter and can be dealt with somewhat easily; failing to actually file your return is a criminal matter and is much harder to deal with in court.
